Grey Abbey Walking Tour - March 5th Highlights

Thank you to everyone that joined our recent walking tour of Grey Abbey Park and Ravine. The walking tour was well attended and even in the extreme cold, we had a group of 34 guests!

The crowd gathers, yet we patiently wait for our start time of 2 pm.

After an introduction to the history of Grey Abbey, we proceed to enjoy the view of the lake

It's a very cold windy day but it's worth it for the remarkable view of the shoreline all the way to East Point

We're so pleased to meet so many wonderful people from the community and share our appreciation of this area. This is me (Jen Falvy), smiling as everyone enjoys the view of the lake. Photo credits Mike Melnechenko.

Some wonderful friends from the community and (half way back) is Steve Smith and Mike Melnechenko; both are 'Friends of the Bluffs' and assisted with arranging the walking tour of Grey Abbey.

Welcome to the Guildwood Pond

I would like to introduce a province-wide conservation program that I'm participating in. The program is called Adopt-A-Pond and is developed and administered in partnership by Environment Canada's Nature Watch program, the Ontario Government's Natural Heritage Information Centre (NHIC) and the Toronto Zoo Wetland conservation program.  The pond I have adopted is situated along the Scarborough shoreline, beside the Guildwood beach and I've now listed it as the official location for Frog Watch Ontario and Ontario Turtle Tally. It's a small pond, with a rough circumference of 400 ft and at its deepest point may only be 4-5 ft deep. The pond sits near a beach at the base of the bluffs, at the end of a service road. For the purpose of this project, I have (unofficially) named it Guildwood Pond.  I will be visiting the pond at least 3 times a week in the spring to report sightings on a routine schedule and whether there are frog...

A Walking Tour of Grey Abbey Park

J oin us Sunday February 12th at 2:00pm We will be meeting at Grey Abbey Park: 190 Greyabbey Trail in Scarborough.  Just  east of Morningside Avenue, on Greyabbey Trail. Parking on street. A 3 minute walk from bus stop on Morningside. TTC bus #116a or #116c from Kennedy Station. Travel time 15 minutes from subway. Bank Swallows flying along the bluffs The Bank Swallow; Riparia Riparia  Status in Ontario: Threatened Location: East Point Park and Bird Sanctuary East Scarborough, Toronto Ontario “Threatened ” means the species lives in the wild but is likely to become endangered if steps are not taken to address factors threatening it. A few facts about this delightful song bird: Bank Swallows nest in burrows along vertical faces of silt, sand or clay. Territories may support colonies of 10 to 2,000 nests with burrows 2-3 ft deep Bank Swallows are extremely social birds. They are seldom alone when outside the nest and because of this close proximity, they have developed many complex social behaviours A small songbird, the Bank Swallow is distinguished in flight by its quick, erratic wing beats. Walking through the Guild Woods

Fallen Ash Sunday May 7, 2017 was another successful and well-attended walk led by Steve Smith and Jen Falvy of Friends of the Bluffs with 52 guests attending! What a wonderful way to meet fellow nature enthusiasts from the local community and greater Toronto region.  In addition to our regular community event listing in the Bluffs Monitor we listed our walk in the Jane's Walk network which drew guests from the west end, downtown, and as far as Thornhill, Ontario. We'd like to thank our guests for their understanding in accepting the change of our walking route. Initially we planned to go along the Guild shoreline and talk about the history of the shoreline, and erosion measures with the service road though we received an email from the TRCA on Friday informing us that road access to the lake would be closed for the weekend due to high water levels. Preserving A Natural Beach and Shoreline

Grey Abbey Beach, Scarborough Bluffs Shoreline, photo Jen Falvy Friday August 3, 2018 marked an important deadline for the public to submit comment to the Ministry of the Environment on their concerns about the TRCA Scarborough Waterfront Project. What seemed like a random date in the middle of summer when many people are either on vacation or making plans for the long weekend of summer, may have been carefully planned by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.  For many, the deadline of August 3 went by unnoticed but for those that have been tirelessly working behind the scenes to preserve this 4 km stretch of natural beach, the date marked a significant turning point and new chapter in our ongoing efforts to preserve the natural heritage of the Scarborough Bluffs Shoreline.  Our comments and concerns have been submitted to Anne Cameron, Project Manager for the Ministry of the Environment.
